Thank You For Your Community Support

UPDATED June 30th: Public studio classes will not be offered until further notice. If you have an active class pass, please consider exchanging the passes for some of the many YouTube classes available or notify BFY by August 1 if you prefer a refund.

Dear Students,

The studio was scheduled to reopen next week for public classes. After looking at the sign up on MindBody (all classes had between 1-4 students registered) and receiving student feedback, at this time, I do not have enough students comfortable with coming back in for studio classes. I am disappointed in many ways, but also relieved as I have reservations about teaching public classes with the current COVID-19 numbers. As several of my students have said, and I agree, even with all the precautions in place, masks cannot be mandated in this environment and I have no way to comfortably screen potential students in public classes.

I have been open for private classes, yoga therapy and energy therapy since June 1. That has been successful and safe. If you want to practice in public together, try goat yoga on the farm! I am also happy to continue to offer video classes and grateful for your support. Though you may not see each other, we are growing. Just this morning, (at least in the Central Time Zone), I received this comment:

“Hello from Barcelona. I’m Pitta Vata Dosha and looking for “my yoga” I found you. So thanks for that class Gracies (Catalonian language)” – Maria

We are also sharing our community with teachers in other parts of the globe:
“I am Brazilian and live in Istanbul and your classes give me a wonderful support in relation to the language and images to be able to teach in English. Thanks! – Tisi

So our community is expanding beyond the brick and mortar walls of BFY! If you have been in the studio for any reason in the past 7+ years, you are an important part of that expansive vibration. I honestly feel that the space still holds us all together. Please join me in welcoming new members from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, England, and all over the US and beyond.

I will continue to offer 3-5 videos per week on YouTube to include Slow Flow Yoga for Strength and Mobility, Somatic Yoga, Yoga Therapy and Restorative Yin Yoga. Though the classes will still go on YouTube, I will no longer be posting all of them for free. The Megan MacCarthy YouTube library has about 150 free videos already. I also have free meditations on Insight Timer. Going forward, the majority of classes and meditations will require a membership through Patreon or a donation. If you are using your class pass for videos, let me know so you will be included in the email link for classes. Some classes will be live streamed and you will have the opportunity to “chat” with each other. Additionally, I will be live streaming a monthly group meditation. The first one is tonight at 7:30 pm on my YouTube channel.

The wheel fell off the bus in March and despite my efforts, trying to keep the public classes running is just putting that same broken wheel back on. Every time I walk into the studio bathroom, the quote “You can’t change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete” stares at me. I miss your faces and hugs, but I am building a new model. Please bring your light and help me build it. The world needs you.

Peace and Love,
Megan

PS I still have stripped blankets, mats and big blue bolsters for sale if you want them for your home studio. Or if you just want to stop and say hello, please let me know!

The Three Gunas

If you are still struggling with the post-election dystopia, have you considered trying yoga? Before you do, may I please explain something? As Gabriel Halpern said in his dharma talk last weekend, starting yoga to find peace and comfort is like being caught in a rain storm and deciding to jump in the ocean.  As a yoga studio owner, it saddens me to see countless class passes expire. In doing what they perceive as purely physical exercises, many students curiously and bravely, perhaps unknowingly, scratch the surface of their mental abyss. Then they suddenly suspend their practice. Either they are not ready or don’t have the the discipline to remove what conceals their joy. Being “set in our ways”, even when they don’t working for us, is a state of Tamas – inertia, darkness, ignorance – think inaction and procrastination.

Excuses are a way of hiding the truth from ourselves. In a Tamasic state, we use a lot of negative energy obscuring reality. To free ourselves from tamas, we have to go through a state of Rajas, (just an inexperienced guess that Black Friday Shopping requires Rajas). The term Rajas in sanskrit refers to the energy of passion, activity and transition. Rajas is change. As we all know, it is agitating being taken out of our comfort zone. When we are able to find balance between dullness (Tamas) and turbulence (Rajas), Sattva is achieved – the pure state of intelligence and virtue.  Sativa is the state of joy and the energy of unconditional love.

The past few weeks have been an “I’m back in “08 again” reminder that I have to keep visiting the bottom to swim. Yoga exposes every dark corner I try to hide from myself in.  Asana brings me into my body; currently a foreign, discontented place. Meditation is not a space where feelings are suppressed; it is the place I connect with emotions and sit in solidarity with them.  When the demons come out, there needs to be a way to purge them.  Writing is an act of surrender and the spark of transformation. Pen and Paper are two friends who simply hold space, without judgement or advice.
